Are We Reclaiming or Losing What Made America Great?

Are we reclaiming or losing what made America great with the recent immigration policies, trade policies, denigration of freedom of the press, other actions that seem downright un-American. When you tune in to the news, is what you are seeing and hearing consistent with the values that defined or will continue to define America? Are we reclaiming or losing what made America great?

One could argue that the apparent increase in blatant racial and ethnic intolerance, hatred, and inequality have always been a part of America. Indeed racial injustices are interwoven throughout America’s history. But, were we not getting better? Were racial and ethnic relations improving?

What has made so many, so comfortable to speak, demonstrate, assault, even kill fellow Americans solely because of racial hatred, much of which is sadly ill-conceived, ill-founded and based on downright lies and misrepresentations. That is the tragedy in it all.

With this kind of spurious and scurrilous speech and behavior, are we reclaiming or losing what made America great?

One must ask why the atmosphere in America is so toxic, not with the harmful chemical spewing from our consumption habits, but because of the constant flow of lies, gross misrepresentations, and propaganda coming from public leaders whose sole purpose is to divide and change America for the worst.

Every day, every news cycle, irrespective of where you turn, contains comments and actions that are so un-American, so different from the America that has taken pride in marching toward respect, equal opportunity and equal rights for all of its citizens.

If the leaders of this nation are doing things that are contrary to the values that made America a good nation, how can we be marching toward greatness?

There is a lot about America that needs fixing. The area of immigration seems to be the one getting all of the attention during the past months and apparently the foreseeable future. But, must we resort to extreme speech and inhuman actions, even inaction, in trying to fix it? Are such actions making America great?

Are you proud of the speech, actions and behavior of your elected officials, who are functioning on your behalf? Do they represent you and your values? Do they engender pride in you and make you feel proud to be an American?

We the people, with our speech, with our actions, are we reclaiming or losing what made America great?

In the coming mid-term elections, commit to vote for those who support your values, who support what is good for America and all Americans.

America is currently losing on the fight on “what made it great”. There is still time, change the president NOW.

There are many things that a politician we voted for can do during their term in the office. And most of the time this are the things they have not properly presented during their campaign since there is so much you can say during those times. The reason we vote for them is because we think they can make our country better hoping that what they promised will become true. Let’s hope that things will be better.

This is really a thoughts provoking piece and you did a good job with it.it’s high time we make our countries great.America is a great country and the its only its citizens can help maintain the tempo.Only people with humane heart should be elected to make the votes worthwhile.

Leaders are mean to make change which will make US great. Also at some point, we can change things by involving ourselves in moral activities.

I’ll be very frank here, and I’m no racist but I have to call it like I see it:The really problem with America from what I’ve heard, seen and witnessed throughout history stems from white supremacy – Racist! This ill has tainted America far more than anything, and continues to do so in different forms. Now since the election of Trump it seems to have reversed time and cause the ills of these white racist to make stir to major surface again and start killing innocent black people and other people that don’t “look like them” and all sorts or heinous, crazy and downright stupid things (and notice I said “stir to major surface” because racism has always been there post slavery but it wasn’t been as harsh as it’s gotten now with blatant killings with no penalty and crazy stuff like that). These fools are want to take things back to slavery days…not gonna happen! We have come too far as a nation and a people to allow something like this to happen; there will flat-out war and chaos before it does. So overall I think America has really gone butt booty backwards in these current times due largely to the ills of racism (reignited by Trump) and America needs to check itself before it wrecks itself! We are all one race: The Human Race. No matter the color or ethnic background. All white people aren’t bad but those damn racist man I don’t know how why their so angry to keep doing the things they do or how they even sleep at night. Just pure evil!

I believe making America great is the total responsibility of all and it will start with voting the right people. When the right people rule, things will definitely work out and make America and Americans great.

Such a thought-provoking article. Taking out the “american pretext” of this article, since I think the prevalent circumstances and issues are also happening in other countries, I think the electorate should seriously reflect on their selection of leaders which they place on power. While some leader-aspirants present promises of a change on the how the country is being governed, it must always be considered these “changes” would be for the betterment of the entire nation, and not only for a certain group of people. The greatness of a nation, for me, is measured on how its people accept and support the policies and decisions of its leaders, and how these actions affect its relation with other countries.

If I may ask what it is that made the US great in the first place? To me I am not from there but the way I see it this question can be really subjective in my opinion.

The leaders that you vote reflects your values in life. I hope people will research first about the candidate and not just vote through popularity. Great article! Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this matter.
