As the new year unfolds, let’s remember that our perspective determines our readiness. Hopefully, we are ready to face the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities it will bring.

Given any challenging situation, do we perceive the glass as half empty or half full? Do we believe in the power of positive thinking? Either could determine our responses to challenges or opportunities.

One thing is certain some level of change will occur, or not occur, whether we choose to be active participants or not in both our private and public lives.

There is so much to consider. But no matter what, remembering that our perspective determines our readiness will be critical.

There is so much hanging in the balance that defines us as a nation. From continuing to value and uphold our constitution, institutions, rule of law and traditions to working on behalf of those laws and policies that are in the best interest of the majority of American citizens.

What about the important issues we face as a nation: Continuing to strengthen our economy, pass meaningful immigration reform, tax reform, gun violence, the environment, bridge the many divides, and a host of other issues.

But how do we cut through the muck and mire to make or support the best decision?

Being anchored in the realization that our perspective determines our readiness will guide those decisions.

Our challenge is being able to cut through the vitriol, the lies, the hypocrisy and double standards that seem to have taken control of our political and electoral processes. The last thing we can afford to do is to become fixated on all the negatives that will be a part of our political process for the months to come and decide not to get involved.

Let us search diligently for the good, those positions and proposed policies that move our nation forward. Let us think about and appreciate what is good about our nation, our way of life and become recharged and energized.

If our perspective determines our readiness, let those thoughts motivate and propel us into action in what is bound to be a challenging year ahead, but also filled with many great opportunities to create and shape a better future.

We can only do that if we improve our state of readiness and are willing to get off the sidelines.
